The Latin name of the Cretan herb is Sideritis syriaca and we find it under the names malotira, mountain tea. It belongs to the genus Sideritis, a family of herbs with innumerable benefits since ancient times. Malotira grows exclusively in Crete at a high altitude above the sea and is used in many recipes and mainly as a herbal drink. The White Mountains of Crete are where these unique plants with yellow flowers are found in greatest population. As a plant endemic to the region, the harvesting and use of malotira has been perfected for centuries.
Malotira was traditionally a morning drink for the Cretans, while as an herb it acts against colds, stomach and respiratory ailments. Malotira acts as an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, tonic, and detoxifier for the body.
If we add a stick of cinnamon and a little honey to the tea tree decoction, we have an excellent emollient and antiseptic for coughs. Finally, it is believed to be beneficial for the blood vessels of the heart.
For the Cretans, traditionally, in colds with severe cough and sore throat, the malotira drink with honey is the appropriate therapeutic agent.
Add 1 tablespoon of malotira to a pot of boiling water and let it boil for 5 minutes. Then let it cool for a few minutes and strain it. Add a spoonful of honey to enhance the taste.
